Miami Nice

Miami NiceMiami Beach may have a bit of a history of corruption and crime, as portrayed in the 1980’s hit series, but today could be described more Miami Nice than Miami Vice – it seems that it is once again the place to go and be seen. With its inauspicious beginnings, having been built on reclaimed land, Miami has had its ups and downs as it has established itself and shaken off its murkier past.Miami NiceFrom drug barons and Russian mobsters to celebrities and artists, Miami has always attracted people looking to escape for one reason or another, but what exactly is the appeal? We have just returned from an amazing trip ahead of our annual conference and, from what we experienced, it was definitely Miami Nice!

The transfer from Miami International Airport is approximately 20-30 minuets depending on the traffic. We arrived at W South Beach, where we were staying for two nights. The hotel is an ocean front location off Collins Avenue and its unique position means that all the rooms have sea views, though the higher up you are the more spectacular. The hotel is in a great location for exploring the local area, shopping, nightlife and restaurants. From here we went to Little Havana, Miami’s vibrant Cuban district for Latino food and cocktails. Miami cuisine is a mix of Latin and Caribbean with a little bit of Mexican thrown in, but we learnt a bit more about this on a culinary walking tour later.Miami NiceOur third night was at the Faena Hotel, which is situated in the Faena District and the mid-beach area of South Beach. This hotel’s décor is a glamorous mix of 1950’s Hollywood style and magical theatre. The grand entrance offers a vista through the lobby (which isn’t a lobby in the traditional sense) to the ocean beyond. Gold columns frame fantastical murals which have been painted on the walls by Spanish artist, Juan Gatti. Miami NiceClose to the pool area is a huge woolly mammoth skeleton plated in 24 karat gold entitled ‘Gone but Not Forgotten’ – it was originally designated for the restaurant, but was so huge it had to be relocated! The restaurant now showcases a giant unicorn ‘Golden Myth’ instead, but both pieces are by artist Damien Hirst.

Rooms at The Faena are decorated in bright turquoise, red, gold and animal prints. The bathroom had a huge marbled walk in shower, enormous tub bath and two sinks. My room had a balcony with a side view of the ocean. For all its decadence though, the bed was not as comfortable as at the W, but I much preferred the opulent décor. The food here was fantastic too.

During our Miami trip we also viewed some other hotels including 1 Hotel South Beach, which was an eco-chic hotel with lovely public spaces and pool area. There was a rooftop bar where we enjoyed a fantastic lunch with amazing seafood and cocktails.

The Setai at South Beach, which is a great hotel for guests requiring total privacy – an oriental designed ocean front hotel with three pools and delicious pan-Asian cuisine. A good location for exploring Miami.

And finally the Aqualina Spa Resort, Sunny Isles Beach which had an amazing penthouse suite with fantastic views from the 46th floor.
