Real Greece

Greek Restaurant

When we got to the beach in Skala, Kefalonia I said, “This is paradise” with a totally straight face!

Lime HeavenNever crowded, remote and untouched appearance, Kefalonia had everything I always dreamed about. The sun was hot, the water crystal and refreshing, and there were no stressed out people in the vicinity to spoil the atmosphere. Having done ‘tourist Greece’ before, we were happily surprised by the loveliness of this island. It’s people were cultured, chilled and warm; we found so much in common with them in that short stay that it was the icing on the cake, and not expected from a couple who had sent our 5 kids  off on an alternative holiday, in order to lap up the silence!

The evenings were just cool enough to shop in the charming streets ‘til past 10pm, and the bars and restaurants were so unique, that we found a rock music venue with a guy who put on videos for us of our favourite: Rory Gallagher! What an enticement to stay up sipping cocktails and beers, until the short walk/taxi back to our hotel.

Greek RestaurantSnorkelling off a small boat to find the octopus and turtles was another memorable afternoon, which was exhilarating, but just short enough not to get too burned alongside those beautiful sun-bleached caves. Essential Kefalonia daily routine is: take your watch off, forget the time, and lie half in the sea or poolside reading your Kindle. There was thankfully no beauty-pageant behaviour either, where only the under 30’s parade on the shore…Kefalonia felt like a welcome to ordinary, ‘real’ people like us!

Greek SaladThe restaurants were good and cheap, and there were no trashy shops to waste your money in. We reckoned we saved loads, by just enjoying the delights this historic island had to offer.

All in all, this holiday took me back many decades to when as a child, me and my best friend used to plan and dream of being stranded on a desert island, and of all the adventures we would have with just no one in the world but us! Sweet innocent times, which came flooding back to me during our stay in Kefalonia. If she’s reading this, she might also remember those far distant halcyon days, next time she visits the islands!
